Our Founder & CEO

Twenty years ago, as a busy young mother, I thought I had all the time in the world to do the things I wanted to do for my family. I took lots and lots of photos, saved my children's precious things, and shoved them into drawers and boxes to deal with later. Of course, later never happened. Before I knew it, 18 years had gone by and my daugher was graduating from high school. There wasn't a single family album in the house. I felt guilty and frustrated, and since I had two boys at home (ages 10 and 14) and twins on the way, I knew I wasn't going to be able to do much more any time soon.
I wanted to give my daughter something special that represented our family life together, something to take with her to college. I had nothing. Then and there, I made it my mission to learn more about what families do to stay connected, and find simple, quick ways to do those things for my own family.
I read an article in a family magazine that talked about what people remember as their "favorite childhood memories." I was fascinated because it wasn't what I expected. For years I tried to create elaborate ways to celebrate birthdays and holidays, and plan different "memorable" family vacations. I understood then, that what we remember most fondly are the simple family events we repeat over and over again.
Three years, and over a hundred books later, I had a good idea of what those "things" were. I call them "The Seven Keys to Creating Family Ties." Once Upon a Family was created to help you accomplish more of these important things for your family, without adding to your already busy schedule. The simple truth is, many of us spend time and money doing things that aren't important, and we often miss the opportunity to do the little things that make all the difference. Once Upon a Family is all about the little things that make a big difference.
Reading by flashlight on the summer camping trip, sleeping under the newly decorated Christmas tree, or Grandma's famous pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. These memories could be annual family vacations, favorite holiday traditions, or easy weekly rituals like Mom's Sunday morning waffles, and Dad's Friday night pizza and video. It's as simple as that! We remember these moments because they touch us in some way... good smells... good feelings... good times... someone special spending time with us.
I was so intrigued by this article about childhood memories that it led to three years of extensive research. I bought every book I could find on the subject of family: traditions, holidays, rituals, family celebrations, memories, keepsakes, family values, reunions, and family ties. I kept thinking, "I wish I knew twenty years ago, when I started my family, what I know now."
At first, I thought that many of us don't really know what we need to do to create family ties. But I soon learned otherwise. We really do know. It's almost instinctive. We all take photos... lots of photos. We save the worn-out stuffed bear, the school papers, and the baby teeth. We plan lots of holiday celebrations and family get-togethers, and we're always searching for ways to make our loved ones feel special. No one tells us to do these things. We simply do them because we know in our hearts how important they are... just like the instinct we have to create a warm, cozy, inviting home that our family will feel good in.
The challenge is that our modern, busy lifestyles make it difficult for us to find the time to organize our memories and keepsakes in powerful ways that can bring our families closer. We spend time and money doing things that are not really important, and often miss the opportunity to do the little things that make all the difference. All we need is a little guidance... we need to understand what's worth doing and what's not, and to find ways to do more for our families in less time.
I created Once Upon a Family to help you see how important family traditions, rituals, and celebrations are in creating the sense of family togetherness that we all crave, and how easy it is to make these family events meaningful to everyone involved. My hope is that the information we provide, the products we offer, and the ideas we share, will leave you feeling inspired to do things differently with your family, hopeful that you can create the kind of family you want, and relieved of having to do things that you don't have time for anyway.
